Five people, including a child were killed in a car bomb explosion in the town of Saluk in Hassakah province in northeastern Syria.

A medical source told The New Arab’s Arabic-language service that the car bomb exploded in the town’s market, also injuring 20 people. The number of casualties is expected to rise, with some of the injured in critical condition.

Saluk is near the Turkish-Syrian border and was captured in October by Turkey and its "Syrian National Army" allies from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), following Turkey’s “Operation Peace Spring”.

Dozens of people have been killed in car and motorcycle bombs in areas of northern Syria controlled by Turkey and the Syrian National Army.

Also on Monday, in the SDF-controlled city of Tabqa in Raqqa province, two employees of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration were killed and another injured when unknown assailants fired on a building belonging to the Autonomous Administration’s Commerce Department.

Suspected Israeli strikes

On Sunday evening, airstrikes of unknown origin hit positions belonging to the Assad regime and allied Iranian-sponsored militias on Sunday evening in Syria’s Deir-al-Zour province, local sources have told The New Arab.

The targeted positions were near the town of Mayadeen, about 50 kilometres from the Syrian-Iraqi border. The sources say they heard explosions followed by the sound of aircraft, adding that Syrian regime forces, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and the pro-regime Liwaa al-Quds Palestinian militia were all present in that area.

Further explosions were heard near the border town of Albukamal, where the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have positions.

Israel is believed to have carried out airstrikes targeting regime troops and pro-Iranian militias in eastern Syria before. It has also targeted Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.

Also on Sunday, three Iranians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Syrian capital Damascus.
