Four Israeli police officers have been treated for light wounds, believed to have been inflicted during a suspected stabbing incident in Jerusalem late Wednesday night.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the attacker was shot and injured and placed under arrest following the incident.

"We've confirmed there was one border police officer injured and taken to hospital. The terrorist himself was arrested at the scene inside the police station," the spokesperson said, referring to the Palestinian suspect.

The stabbings took place near a police station in Armon Hanatziv, southeast Jerusalem, with the area cordoned off and heighteneed security across the contested city.

The suspect reportedly stabbed an officer in the head before being shot and lightly injured himself, Haaretz stated.

"When we got to the site, we saw three men who were fully conscious, suffering only minor injuries. We gave them first aid and took them to the hospital, fully conscious and in stable condition," Magen David Adom paramedic Elad Pass told the Israeli newspaper.

Jerusalem has witnessed a number of stabbing incidents in recent years.

A fragile ceasefire is in place between Israel and Gaza, following barrages of Hamas rockets and Israeli airstrikes this week.
