Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Sunday said they killed several Saudi soldiers and "mercenaries" in an armed attack in the Jizan Region, adding that movement wounded others in the operation.

"Popular committees and military launched a major attack in the Jahfan Mountain East, in the Jizan Region," the rebels' al-Masirah television said, quoting a military source.

"We killed several Saudi soldiers and seized their weapons during the operation."

Yemen's rebels - who have faced persistent bombing by a Saudi-led coalition that has exacted a heavy civilian death toll - have stepped up missile and drone attacks across the Saudi border in recent weeks.

At least one person was killed and 56 wounded in Saudi Arabia in three such Houthi attacks since June 12.

Following the attacks, Saudi state media have intensified coalition air raids on rebel positions in the northern Yemeni province of Hajjah and the Houthi-held capital Sanaa.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly accused Iran of supplying sophisticated weapons to the Houthis, a charge Tehran denies.

A Saudi-led coalition allied with Yemen's government has been at war with the Houthis since 2015. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of Yemenis, with Saudi-led airstrikes blamed for many civilian deaths.

The fighting has triggered what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced and in need of aid.
