Iran beats, detains family of executed wrestler Navid Afkari

Iranian security forces attacked the family of a champion wrestler who was executed last year, a relative said on social media.

The mother, father and sister of wrestler Navid Afkari were beaten and briefly detained, his brother Saeed Afkari said.

"Today… my family and some of the relatives gathered in front of Adelabad Prison to protest against my brothers' 280 days in solitary confinement. Plainclothes officers severely beat my mother, my sister, my father, my aunts and others. They confiscated the cell phones, arrested my sister and one of the women and released them an hour later," he wrote on Twitter.

"Two female officers beat my mother so that her head was hit on the asphalt," he added.

The family members were gathered outside the Adel Abad prison in Shiraz, where two of Afkari's brothers are held in solitary confinement.

Habib and Vahid Afakari were arrested along with their brother in 2018 during a wave of anti-government protests.

Navid Afkari, 27, was later sentenced to death over the murder of a security guard. 

He was allegedly tortured into confessing. 

Human rights groups described his prosecution as a "travesty of justice" and international sporting groups condemned his execution.

His brothers have also been subjected to torture while in prison, according to reports.

Habib Afkari was sentenced to more than 54 years in prison, while his brother Vahid was handed a 27-year sentence.
