Iranian lawmakers have criticised British diplomats in Tehran for organising a "mixed-gender party" where alcohol was served during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Member of Parliament Alireza Salimi accused the diplomats of breaking the norms of the conservative country, news website Persia Digest reported on Monday.

"It is astonishing that an embassy in our country holds a mixed party for the so-called artists in Ramadan and serves alcohol," Salimi was quoted as saying.

It is unclear if the event took place at the British embassy.

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has ordered an investigation into the party.

A British and a Dutch diplomat were both briefly detained last week during a party in the capital Tehran, they were released after being identified as foreign government workers.

Mixed-gender events and alcohol are illegal in the Islamic Republic.

Authorities in Iran regularly carry out raids on private parties in an attempt to clampdown "corrupting influences".
