Israel army kills Palestinian during raid on occupied West Bank's Jenin city
Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian man early on Wednesday in the flashpoint town of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.
Mohammad Marei, 25, died from a bullet wound to the chest, the Palestinian health ministry said.
Official Palestinian news agency Wafa said he was killed during an Israeli raid in the city.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group claimed that one of its men was killed "confronting the occupation forces" in Jenin.
The Israeli army said it conducted alleged "counter-terrorism activities" in several West Bank locations overnight.
It claimed that, in Jenin, Palestinian gunmen opened fire on troops.
"A number of suspects also hurled explosive devices at soldiers, who responded with fire. A hit was identified," the army alleged, without specifically commenting on Marei's death.
His killing comes just weeks after Israeli forces fatally shot renowned Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin's refugee camp in May.
A Palestinian health ministry report released in early June said that Israel had killed 62 Palestinians since the start of the year.
Israeli security forces have launched near-daily raids in the West Bank in recent weeks, including in and around Jenin, which have led to the killings of Palestinians.
