Israeli security guards at a military checkpoint in the occupied West Bank shot dead a Palestinian assailant who ran at them with a knife on Friday, the Israeli defence ministry said.

Civilian guards employed by the MOD Crossing Points Authority called on the man to stop but when he kept coming he was shot and killed, the ministry said in a statement.

The incident took place just outside the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarem.

The Palestinian health ministry confirmed that a man was killed by Israeli fire but did not immediately identify him.

Last month, private Israeli security guards shot and killed a Palestinian woman at the Qalandiya checkpoint, with video footage of the incident raising concerns about the excessive use of force by Israel.

The woman does not pose a threat to the lives of Israeli forces at the checkpoint and appears confused in the video.

The Israeli human rights group B'Tselem said it was still investigating the incident, but that it appeared to resemble past instances in which Israel used excessive force.

Palestinians have carried out dozens of stabbing attacks against Israeli security forces and civilians in recent years. But human rights groups say Israeli forces often use excessive force, opening fire when suspects could have been disarmed and detained through non-lethal means.
