One Palestinian was killed and four others wounded by Israeli occupying forces on Wednesday during an Israeli military raid on the Jenin refugee camp north of the West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry announced.

The young man was identified as 18-year-old Ahmad Masad, from the village of Burqin in the Jenin region. According to local sources, he was fatally shot while taking part in confrontations against raiding Israeli forces outside of the refugee camp.

Masad was himself a former prisoner in Israeli jails. "He had come out of prison three months ago, and he was planning to get married," his brother, Ashraf Masad told The New Arab.

"He loved agriculture and worked in the land, and he also loved to raise and trade horses," said Masad.

"In the recent months, he felt revolted by the continuing Israeli raids and the killing of several of his friends and young people his age, which made him go into activism," his brother added.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement mourned Ahmed Masad as one of its members in a statement released to the press. The statement added that Masad was killed while "confronting the occupation forces this morning in the city of Jenin and its resilient refugee camp."

"Israeli forces raided the camp in large numbers before dawn," Atta Abu Rmeileh, secretary of Fatah in the Jenin refugee camp, told The New Arab.

"Armed men immediately engaged the Israeli troops and the exchange of fire continued inside the camp's neighbourhoods," said Abu Rmeileh.

"Israeli forces arrested one former prisoner and wounded four young men, one of whom is in critical condition," he added.

On its part, the Israeli army said that its soldiers had responded to fire from Palestinians during its raid in Jenin and that it had arrested twelve Palestinians across the West Bank, Israeli media reported.

Israeli forces have killed 42 Palestinians since the beginning of 2022, 11 of whom were killed in the Jenin region.

On Tuesday, Israeli forces killed a 20-year-old Palestinian during a military raid on the Aqbat Jabr refugee camp near Jericho.

Last week, an 18-year-old Palestinian schoolgirl died of her wounds nine days after being shot by Israeli soldiers raiding Jenin city.
