Joe Biden promises to be president for 'all Americans'
The Democratic former vice president won this year's record-breaking election after surpassing 270 Electoral College votes with a win in the battleground state of Pennyslvania, news networks projected on Saturday.
"America, I'm honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country," Biden said in a statement released soon after he was projected winner of the race.
Biden will become the 46th president of the United States, with Kamala Harris becoming the country's first ever female, Black and South Asian vice president.
"The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a president for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me," Biden said.
After beating out incumbent Donald Trump, "it's time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation", the president-elect added.
"It's time for America to unite. And to heal," Biden said. "We are the United States of America. And there's nothing we can't do, if we do it together."
Harris, a California senator and former attorney, said that the election was "about so much more than Joe Biden or me".
"It's about the soul of America and our willingess to fight for it," she said in a tweet on Saturday.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let's get started," Harris said.
For his part, Trump has refused to concede defeat in the election, accusing Biden of "rushing to falsely pose" as the president-elect.
"We all know why Joe Biden is rushing to falsely pose as the winner, and why his media allies are trying so hard to help him: they don’t want the truth to be exposed," Trump said.
"The simple fact is this election is far from over."
Trump said that states had not yet certified the results, and his campaign has launched multiple legal challenges.
However, near complete results issued by each state showed an insurmountable lead for Biden, allowing network news channels to call the overall result, as they do every election.
