Israeli abuses at Al-Aqsa Mosque have drawn the ire of neighbouring Jordan, which on Tuesday submitted a complaint to Tel Aviv over its conduct at the Muslim holy site.

The East Jerusalem mosque is the most sacred Muslim place of worship in Palestine and the third most revered in all of Islam.

Since the holy city fell under illegal Israeli occupation in 1967, the area has frequently been the scene of aggression from settlers and Israeli forces.

Israel was urged to acknowledge the rights of the Islamic waqf department, which is managed by Amman and administers the mosque and its compound, Jordanian foreign affairs ministry spokesperson Haitham Abu Al-Foul said, Anadolu Agency reported.

"The ministry sent an official protest note to demand Israel halt its violations and provocations and respect the historic and legal status quo and the sanctity of the mosque," Abu Al-Foul said.

He said that the whole of Al-Aqsa is solely for Muslim believers and slammed the extremists who stormed the compound it sits in repeatedly this month during multiple Jewish festivals.

These have included the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur, on 15 September, and the religion's new year, celebrated from 6 to 8 September and known as Rosh Hashana.

Many Jews believe Al-Aqsa was the site of two Jewish temples in biblical times, considering it their faith's most sacred place.
