Former prime minister of Kuwait, Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, was ordered detained pending inquiries as part of a corruption case on Tuesday, according to Kuwaiti media reports.

The court-imposed decision came alongside the detention of Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah, an ex-interior minister, and two figures from the armed forces.

The charges relate to a case originating in November 2018, when ex-defence minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Sabah formally alleged there had been abuses of public money in relation to the nation’s Army Fund totalling more than 240 million dinar ($768 million).

The offences purportedly occurred while Sheikh Nasser was defence minister from 2001 to 2011.

Established in the 1950s, the Army Fund was intended to support Kuwait’s defence needs and operates under the purview of the defence ministers.

Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas reported that the case will go before court on 27 April.

A source who spoke to Turkey's Anadolu Agency said a publication blackout was also granted at the behest of the politicians’ legal representatives.
