Lebanon's oldest MP, Michel Murr, dies after contracting Covid-19

A veteran Lebanese politician has died on Sunday after contracting the novel coronavirus, the official Lebanese News Agency reported.

Michel Murr died at age 89 after suffering from complications resulting from Covid-19.

Murr was the oldest lawmaker in the current Lebanese parliament and was admitted to hospital in December after contracting the virus.

He served as MP for the Metn district for over two decades, and had previously held positions in several governments, including the post of deputy prime minister and the minister of the interior, defence, telecommunications and housing.

Murr's family announced in a statement on Sunday that a public funneral will not be held due to coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

His health had deteriorated in recent years and he had stopped attending parliamentary sessions.

Michel Murr was also the father of Elias Murr, former Minister of the Interior and the grandfather of ex-MP Nayla Tueni..

Lebanon has recorded 299,000 virus infections, including 3,031 deaths, and 178,000 recoveries.
