An Israeli security guard has sustained serious injuries after being stabbed in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday afternoon, according to al-Araby al-Jadeed.

The assailant was reportedly shot dead by Israeli forces following the attack.

Some Palestinian sources have said the man was of Turkish naitonality, however Israeli security agency Shin Bet told AFP the man was a Palestinian from the West Bank.

The security guard, in his twenties, was treated by emergency services and taken to Hadassah hospital after being stabbed in the upper body on al-Wad street in the heart of the Old City, according to Arab 48.

Witnesses to the attack told al-Araby al-Jadeed that Israeli soldiers fired heavily at the attacker and left him lying on the street having sustained serious injuries.

Witnesses added that the attacker was in his forties, notably older than the security guard.

Israeli forces subsequently closed down Palestinian markets and announced a military shut down in the area.

Entrance points to the Old City were closed off and Israeli forces entered the Arab parts of Jerusalem preventing Palestinians from entering the Old City.

The region has witnessed an uptick in violent attacks, including a deadly car ramming incident, since Friday which marked the 100-day anniversary of US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
