Egypt football captain Mo Salah faced abuse - including a laser pen directed at his eyes - by Senegalese fans as the Pharaohs crashed out of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday evening.

Salah played the second leg of Egypt's World Cup qualifier at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium in the Senegalese capital Dakar,  losing 3-1 on penalties.

The Liverpool striker, who was one of the penalty takers, had lasers projected onto his face by Senegal fans, moments before missing a penalty that led to Egypt's defeat.

Laser pens were also directed at Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy as he stood on the goal line during the penalty shoot-out.

The Egyptian Football Association said members of the team were also subject to racist abuse by Senegal fans and the body will file a complaint against its counterpart, according to Sky News.

The incident caused huge uproar from football fans on social media, who dubbed Senegal’s qualification as "unfair".

Videos showed Senegalese fans pelting Salah with stones and bottles as left the pitch with security guards shielding the Egypt captain as he walked into the tunnel.

Salah was on the receiving end of abuse during the World Cup qualifying games.

Salah was met by Senegalese fans chanting the name of his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mané. Salah’s teammate Mostafa Mohamed has come to the defence of Salah.

Sadio Mané’s penalty kick saw Senegal secure a place in the World Cup scheduled to take place in Qatar later this year.
