A prominent Saudi prince who served as governor of the holy city of Mecca has died, Saudi state news reported.

Prince Mutaib bin Abdullah Al-Saud who was the oldest survivng son of the kingdom's founder Ibn Saud, was pronounced dead on Monday, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported, citing the kingdom's Royal Court.

The prince, and older brother of current King Salman, served as the governor of Mecca province from 1958 to 1961 before taking up the position of minister of municipal and rural affairs in 1980.

He will be buried on Tuesday, Saudi news reported.
