One Israeli killed, two injured in occupied West Bank gun attack

One Israeli settler was killed and two more injured late on Thursday in a gun attack on their car on a road between Nablus and Jenin, in the north of the occupied West Bank.

The fatally shot Israeli was identified as a resident of the Shaveh Shomron settlement, built on Palestinian land near Nablus. Israeli media outlets reported that he was a trainee at a pre-military school in the evacuated settlement of Hofesh, South of Jenin.

The Israeli army commander for the West Bank said in a statement Thursday that the attack was carried out by Palestinian militants who fired some 10 rounds at the settlers’ car.

Israel's army would send three additional brigades' worth of troop reinforcements to the West Bank in response, the official said.

Israeli raids

Following the attack, Israeli forces raided the Palestinian towns of Arraba, Qabatia and Zababdeh. Israeli forces confiscated security cameras’ tapes and arrested at least two Palestinians, local media reported.

Palestinians on social media shared calls to gather at the entrances of towns and villages in the Nablus and Jenin regions, in order to confront Israeli forces.

Towards midnight, Palestinians opened fire at the Israeli checkpoint of Al-Jalamah, north of Jenin, as Israeli settlers pelted Palestinian cars with stones near Arraba, west of Jenin.

The northern West Bank has been witnessing a rise in Palestinian armed activity against Israeli forces in the past months. In late November, the Israeli army announced it had dismantled a network of armed Palestinian militants.
