The military wing of Gaza's Islamic Jihad movement has released dramatic footage showing a sniper attack that saw a bullet ricochet of an Israeli soldier's helmet.

The al-Quds Brigades released a video of the attack, which took place late last month, on Sunday.

"The attack was in response to the Zionist soldiers' violations against the Palestinian people," the faction said in a statement posted on its website.

The group said the footage shows an Israeli soldering firing at protesters before he is struck by sniper fire on his helmet, leaving him with a "moderate injury".

Residents of blockaded Palestinian enclave have staged mass protests on the border since 30 March.

Israeli soldiers have killed at least 247 Palestinians since the demonstrations on the border with Israel erupted - mostly by sniper fire.

Two Israeli soldiers have been killed over the same period.

The protesters want to be able to return to the homes their families fled in the war surrounding Israel's creation in 1948, and are calling for an end to the Isreaeli blockade of Gaza.

The United Nations last month condemned Israel for using excessive force against unarmed protestors in Gaza.
