Palestinian protester dies of gunshot wounds as Israeli settlers continue Al-Aqsa raids

A 34-year-old man has become the latest Palestinian to die from wounds sustained when Israeli forces forcefully suppressed protests in the West Bank last month, the Palestinian Health ministry said on Wednesday.

Fadi Wehha, a student from Birzeit town, was shot in the head by Israeli forces during a protest two weeks ago at the northern entrance to the cities of Ramallah and Al-Bireh.

Wehha had previously spent eight years in Israeli prisons, including five consecutively.

Israeli forces deployed tear gas, stun grenades, skunk spray and live rounds on Palestinian protesters, including inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque last month, when protests broke out across the West Bank, Gaza and within Israel's 1948 borders.

Early on Wednesday, Israeli settlers once again stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, marking the latest in a string of provocations by Israeli extremists since a ceasefire ended Israel's bombardment of Gaza late last month.

The settlers entered the compound, which is considered Islam's third-most holiest site, under the protection of Israeli police, guards at the mosque told The New Arab's Arabic-language service.

The guards, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Israeli settlers had recently started to position themselves adjacent to Jerusalem's iconic gold-topped Dome of the Rock Mosque to carry out religious rituals.

Israeli extremist groups claim a "right" to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which they refer to as the Temple Mount. Some wish to demolish the mosque and build a Jewish temple on its site.

Palestinians took to the streets against Israel's forced expulsions of Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of Jerusalem and its raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
