Qatar designates industrial zone hospital as coronavirus treatment centre

Qatar said it will utilise a hospital in an industrial area of Doha into a coronavirus treatment centre, it was announced on Monday.
The Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital will be the effective frontline in the fight against Covid-19 in the Gulf state, as the deadly respiratory disease which has killed tens thousands of people across the globe continues to spread.
Hamad Medical Corporation, which operates the hospital, said that patients suffering from moderate to severe symptons of the illness will be treated at the centre, Qatar Tribune reported.
Health authorities decided to transform the Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital into a Covid-19 treatment centre due to its state-of-art technology, and will treat locals and residents found with the disease.
"The rapid transformation of HMGH into a Covid-19 treatment facility is an example of the healthcare sector’s proactive approach to confront this pandemic," Public Health Minister Dr Hanan Mohamed al Kuwari said in a statement.
"Right from the outset, we have acted quickly and decisively and put measures in place without delay."
Dr Saad Al-Kaabi, who heads Qatar's Covid-19 response team, said that the hospital has 147 beds. This includes 42 intensive care units and 105 inpatient beds, but can be expanded if the need arises.
"We are able to increase that capacity to 471 beds (221 intensive care beds and 250 inpatient beds) as well as provide a dedicated Covid-19 Emergency Department with the capacity of 150 beds should it be needed in the future," Dr Kaabi said, according to the webisite.
"The decision to transform [the hospital] into a Covid-19 treatment facility is part of the healthcare sector's proactive plan to ensure it can manage any potential escalation in the number of patients testing positive for the virus."
Qatar has reported 693 people with the disease since the first case was discovered late February.
The government has enacted widespread measures to deal with the outbreak, including closing schools.
