Ramadan worshippers stop 'hammer attack' at London mosque

Worshippers at a mosque in west London on Monday detained a man after he tried to attack congregants.

The Metropolitan police said officers were called to an incident at the mosque in Southall at 4.30 a.m. after reports of a man armed with a hammer.

Worshippers detained the man prior to the arrival of police officers.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.

Police said the man may have been "involved in a dispute with people who he believed to have been attendees from the mosque the previous day."

No injuries were reported.

Earlier this year, UN chief Antonio Guterres warned against growing hatred of Muslims after a deadly massacre at two mosques in New Zealand killed over 50 people.

Monitoring group Tell MAMA reported a six-fold increase in reports of anti-Muslim hate crimes in the UK following the deadly Christchurch attacks.
