Plotters are readying assassination attempts and other efforts to target certain Tunisian officials, the country's President Kais Saied claimed on Thursday.
"According to the Minister of the Interior, there is even a recording of a phone call that specifies the day of the assassinations," the president claimed in a video posted to his office's Facebook page.
Saied asked citizens to be watchful for "the plots of some traitors", though did not reveal who he meant specifically, Anadolu Agency reported.
The comments follow the "Citizens Against the Coup" collective launching a hunger strike in opposition to the president's 25 July move to suspend parliament and dismiss the prime minister.
Citizens Against the Coup is made up of notable figures in Tunisian society and Moncef Marzouki, the nation's ex-president, said he will "symbolically" participate in their action.
The politician, who lives in France, was recently handed four years' prison time in absentia.
He was convicted of "assaulting the external security of the state" after he called for protests against President Kais Saied and urged France to end its support for Tunisia.
There is no suggestion the Citizens Against the Coup hunger strike is linked to Saied's latest claims.
Many have described the North African leader's actions on 25 July and afterwards as a "coup". Saied earlier this month decided Tunisia's parliament would remain suspended pending December 2022 elections.
