Shots were fired near the Austrian Embassy in the Turkish capital on Sunday, state news have reported, leading to a security clampdown in Ankara.

The shots were fired into the air from a white car, Anadolu agency reported, with Turkish security forces briefly closing roads near the embassy in Ankara.

Crime scene investigators discovered many shell casings overnight, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

It is unclear why the embassy was targeted.

The private Ihlas news agency said the incident happened around midnight with police searching for the car in the area.

In August, three shots were fired and hit the gate and reinforced window outside the US Embassy in Ankara in another drive-by shooting.

The US embassy is located on the same boulevard as the Austrian, about 130 meters (427 feet) away.
