The head of the Syrian National Coalition has appealed to regional and international states to intervene and stop terrorism taking hold in Syria.

Khaled Khoja asked them to act now to prevent Syria becoming a base for the "ugliest forms of terrorism embodied by the Islamic State group, President Bashir Assad, and sectarian militias".

He called for greater civilian and military support, especially in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Qalamoun, Daraa, and Suweida.

The announcement was made at a press conference held with president of the SNC, Ahmad Tumah, and its defence minister, Salim Idris.

Khoja also called for a safe zone to be established to stop Assad covertly helping IS, adding that in Aleppo the regime is inadvertedly helping the militant group by bombing areas where opposition fighters are based, and helping IS enter them.

"It is no longer acceptable to leave the Syrian people to face multifaceted terror alone," he said.

"It is unacceptable for the Syrians to see international coalition airplanes flying over to attack IS in less vulnerable area, and ignoring the IS massacres taking place against them."

Khoja also urged opposition factions to unite, and prevent the regime overcoming the series of setbacks it has suffered recently.
