Teenager shot dead, tear gas fired in Khartoum anti-coup protest

A teen has been shot dead in Khartoum's anti-coup protests on Sunday, where Sudanese security forces fired teargas at hundreds of protesters who rallied against last month's coup, witnesses and medics said.

The 16-year-old boy was shot in the head and fatally wounded in the Sudanese capital in a crackdown by security forces on the protests.

The demonstrators marched from downtown Khartoum towards the presidential palace in the centre of the capital, said an AFP correspondent.

This comes hours after Sudanese mediators announced that the military had reached a deal to reinstate Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, who has been under house arrest since the October 25 power grab.

The power grab, which saw General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on October 25 declare a state of emergency and oust the government, triggered a wave of mass street protests in which 40 demonstrators have been killed, according to medical sources.

The return of Hamdok, a British-educated economist who has worked for the United Nations and African organisations, has been a key demand of international community.
