Four migrant workers died after a fire broke out a textile factory in the major Turkish city of Istanbul on Friday afternoon.

Three of the victims were Syrians, while the nationality of the fourth victim was not yet confirmed, Syrian-owned Orient TV reported.

The three Syrian men were named by the Euphrates Post as Jasim Naif Mohammed al-Wakaa, Aadi Wahid al-Wudwid and Majid Mohammed al-Saidi. All three men were from Deir az-Zour governorate in eastern Syria, other local media outlets reported.

The four victims had locked themselves in a toilet to escape the fire but died from smoke inhalation, the Istanbul governorship said Friday night.

The governorship said it had opened an investigation into the blaze.

"A criminal complaint has been filed against the owner of the workplace to the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor," their statement read.

The four-storey factory is located in Istanbul's Gungoren district, a hub for many industries including textiles.

Turkish garment factory owners have been accused of exploiting informal workers, including Syrian child refugees.
