Three Syrian civilians, including a child, were shot by Turkish soldiers on Friday evening in the northwestern province of Idlib.

A Turkish soldier at a guard post near the Al-Karamah camp for internally displaced people shot a child who was grazing sheep, a source in the camp told The New Arab's Arabic-language service. It is not clear why the soldier allegedly fired on the child.

The child was taken to hospital in a critical condition, the source added.

Several young men from the camp, which is located near the border town of Atmeh, went to the guard post to protest the shooting.

They allegedly threw rocks at the Turkish soldiers, the source said, adding that someone in the crowd also lobbed a grenade at the post. Turkish forces fired on the protesters, injuring two men.

Last week, a Turkish soldier was killed in a rocket attack on a military convoy in Idlib. Another four soldiers were wounded in the attack, which was not claimed by any group.

Turkey has occupied areas of northern Syria since 2016, when the military and allied Syrian rebel forces launched its first campaign against the Islamic State group and Kurdish-led forces.
