Trump says US allies 'worse than the enemy' in bizarre rant

President Donald Trump said that US allies treat "us worse than the enemy" in a bizarre claim in which he accused Germans of preferring his predecessor, Barack Obama.

During a rally in Tampa, Florida, Trump took a swipe at Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, and told his supporters that his policies would put the US in a "depression".

"He wants you to surrender our country to China, to all of these over countries that have taken total advantage of us," President Trump said.

"You know in many ways our allies treat us worse than the enemy. [With] the enemy at least we have our guard up. Our allies, what they have done to us in terms of military protection and trade is disgraceful.

"And when they come out and they say they like Barack Hussein Obama much more than they like Trump, that means I’m doing my job," the president said, to applause.

He also took the chance to criticise Germany.

"Now Germany said it the other day - and I have roots in Germany, but Germany said it the other day. They like Barack Hussein Obama, and they should because Germany is delinquent in their NATO payments, very delinquent.

"They’re at half a level, and they are very rich, they could do whatever they want, it’s not like they don’t have the mone y. And I called them out and said if you don’t pay I’m going to start taking our troops out."

Trump is at the final leg of the presidential race, and on Thursday enlisted the aid of right-wing populist politician Nigel Farage.

Introducing him as "one of the most powerful men in Europe", Trump invited Nigel Farage on to the stage at a campaign rally held in Goodyear, Arizona, on Wednesday.

"He's a very non-controversial person too, right?" the president joked with a cheering audience.

"He's very shy," Trump added, gesturing towards the founder of the United Kingdom's Brexit Party.

Farage responded: "Oh, I'm very non-controversial and shy - compared to you."

Lambasting the "media and pollsters", Farage hit back at opponents of Trump who he said had spent four years trying to "delegitamise" the president with the "Russia hoax" and a "false impeachment" scandal.

"Most human beings, under that barrage, would have given up," the former UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader said.

"This is the single most resilient and bravest person I have ever met in my life," Farage gestured towards Trump to resounding cheers from the audience.

The right-wing populist - who has recently campaigned against migration into the UK - encouraged attendees to cast their vote for Trump, who he hailed as having brought "Israel together with Arab nations in a way that nobody ever believed was possible"
