In light of Emirati Women’s Day 2021 on 28 August, the UAE celebrate and put emphasis on the importance of women across the country and their role to achieve the UAE Centennial 2071.

Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, who acts as Chairwoman of UAE’s General Women’s Union, announced the theme for this year's Emirati Women’s Day is ‘Women: Ambitions and Inspiration for the Next 50 Years’.

As part of the celebration, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) drew attention to female leaders and staff and recognised their contribution to the country.

"Dubai Electricity and Water Authority works to provide all necessary support for female employees to turn challenges into opportunities and keep pace with change”,  Khawla Al Mehairi, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Government Communications at DEWA said.

"This is in accordance with the ‘National Strategy for Empowerment of Emirati Women’ and the wise leadership’s vision to achieve development in society by empowering women. This enhances their role in shaping the future to achieve the UAE Centennial 2071 to make the UAE the world’s leading nation”, Al Mehairi added.

The UAE has made progress on women’s rights in recent years including domestic violence protections, however, Human Rights Watch has said that more still needs to be done on the rights of women in the UAE as it’s not enough.

Women’s inclusion was announced as part of the five-decade-long UAE Centennial 2071 plan, which was launched by the Cabinet and provides a map for the government to implement its power and build a strong reputation to be the "best country in the world by 2071".

The plan focuses on four main areas, education, economy, government development, and community cohesion as well as "advanced technology and engineering, and instilling an Emirati moral values system in future generations."
