A British national died in Iran last month after travelling there to undergoing cosmetic surgery, according to media reports.

Louise Smith, a hair stylist who lived in Dubai, travelled to Iran for a procedure, The Sun and The Mirror newspapers reported. She died on July 28, aged 37.

Iran is known for offering cosmetic surgery at extremely low prices, with 150,00 nose jobs believed to have been carried out in the country in 2019. It is not clear which procedure Smith undertook, nor whether it was directly linked to her death.

The New Arab contacted the British Embassy in Tehran on Tuesday seeking further details about the case, but received no response by the time of publication.

Smith's loved ones have expressed shock at her death.

"I still can't comprehend that this happened," said Danni Chauhan, her friend. "What a young life lost all because we want to look a certain way that social media portrays us to look like. I'm so sorry you had to go through this alone."

Her family are struggling to repatriate her body and have reportedly launched a crowdfunding campaign that raised £14,000 as of Tuesday, The Sun reported.
