US's Sullivan reaffirms Biden's commitment to 'help Saudi Arabia defend its territory'

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan reaffirmed President Joe Biden's commitment to "help Saudi Arabia defend its territory" during a meeting with Saudi vice defence minister Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on Tuesday, the White House said.

During the meeting Sullivan also underscored the longstanding partnership between the two nations, the White House said in a written statement.

"Mr Sullivan reaffirmed President Biden's commitment to help Saudi Arabia defend its territory, and expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia's leadership in securing a UN-brokered truce in Yemen," the White House said.

"They also discussed the importance of coordinating efforts to ensure global economic resilience."

It comes amid a two-month-long ceasefire in Yemen, which has seen years of war between the Houthis rebels and Saudi-led coalition forces supporting the internationally recognised government.

The Houthis seized Yemen's capital of Sanaa in 2014, with the coalition intervening the year after.

Both sides have been accused of grave violations by human rights groups.
