Weightlifter wins Qatar’s first ever Olympic gold medal
Qatar secured its first ever gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.

The weightlifter set two Olympic records [Qatar Olympics Committee]

Qatar's Fares Ibrahim Elbakh won the gold medal in the men's 96kg weightlifting event and set an Olympic record of a combined lift of 402kg at the Tokyo Games on Saturday (Jul 31).    

Elbakh lifted 177 kg before setting an Olympic record with his clean and jerk lift of 225 kg. His combined lift totalled 402 kg - also a record.

The olympian also attempted a world record 232 kg clean and jerk but fell short. Elbakh is a two-time World Championships medalist and has previously won two gold medals at the World Youth Championships.

He also secured a silver medal at the 2018 Asian games.

His competitors at the men's 96kg weightlifting event on Saturday, Venezuela's Keydomar Vallenilla Sanchez, and Georgia's Anton Pliesnoi claimed silver and bronze respectively.
