COP27: Climate Change & the Arab World

From 6-18 November 2022, the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh will welcome leaders, organisations and lobbyists from around the world for the global climate summit, COP27. The summit is expected to address previous and new pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions in a world now challenged by an energy crisis spurred by Russia's war in Ukraine. But the selection of Egypt as host has been widely condemned by human rights and climate activists as an example of 'greenwashing' authoritarian regimes. Nonetheless, as COP's first Arab host, Egypt's selection may yet shine a light on the accelerating climate crises faced by countries of the Middle East and the Global South plagued by water scarcity, flooding and drought.
