A Kuwaiti lawmaker has collapsed and died during a parliamentary session.

Nabil al-Fadhl died of an unspecified medical condition during a parliamentary session Tuesday, Parliament Speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim told Kuwait News Agency.

Fadhl was elected to parliament in 2012, and viewed as a liberal within Kuwait's political system. Kuwait's parliament is viewed as one of the freest in the Arab world.

The MP was a former Kuwait Airways pilot and columnist who wrote extensively about various political issues.

He was outspoken against what he saw as regression and backwardness from Islamist parliament members

Fadhl sparked controversy earlier this year when he said he supported legalising the sale of alcohol in the "dry" Gulf state.
