The Pentagon has issued a stern warning to the Islamic State group's leader, Abubakr al-Baghdadi.

The Islamic State group leader, will "eventually taste justice", the Pentagon warned as the US military continued to target the militant group in the region.

"We are hunting him, and we will find him," military spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said.

"Just like we found his mentor, [Abu Musab] al-Zarqawi, and killed him. Just like we found the grand master of terrorism, Osama bin Laden; we killed him. We are going to find Baghdadi, and he will taste justice."

The stern remarks come on the heels of numerous US-led coalition strikes on senior IS leaders in Iraq and Syria in recent weeks.

The militant group's second in command, Abd ar-Rahman Mustafa al-Qaduli, who had a $7 million bounty on his head, was reportedly killed last month in the US' continued efforts to "systematically eliminate" the Islamic State group's leadership ranks.

Omar al-Shishani, a Chechen that held a de-facto defence minister post for the Islamic State group, was also reported killed last month.

"I don't know if that justice will look like a Hellfire missile, or if it will look like a dark prison cell somewhere, but he will find justice one day," Warren said, referring to al-Baghdadi.

Warren suggested the militant leader travels between Iraq and Syria - both countries that have lost large swathes of territory to the Islamic State group.

A $10 million reward has been offered for information leading to his whereabouts.
