Tareq Abu Zaid, a reporter from al-Aqsa TV, remains locked up by the Palestinian Authority.
A Palestinian court in Nablus in the northern West Bank has extended the detention of journalist Tareq Abu Zaid, a reporter with al-Aqsa TV, a Hamas-affiliated TV station.

He will remain behind bars for a further 15 days on charges of "spreading false news damaging the prestige of the state".

The father of the detained journalist told The New Arab that this was the second time the Magistrates' Court had extended his son's detention. Tareq's lawyer will submit a request for the court to release him on Sunday, his father said.

The PA has been increasingly intolerant of opposition journalists in recent months, analysts have noted.

On Thursday, student activist Kifah Quzmar was released after reportedly being imprisoned for calling the PA "corrupt" in an online post last month.

Last year, Palestinian Authorities attempted to close down The New Arab bureau in Ramallah, following the news network's coverage of the clashes against Israel.

In the wake of renewed popular violence against Israel, the Fatah-dominated PA has come under increased criticism for security coordination with Israel.
