Colonel Bakour Salim, member of the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Commission (HNC) was killed on Thursday in an apparent suicide attack.

"Initial information indicate Col. Salim was killed today (Thursday) after a meeting he was attending in the Mahroutha area of Damascus province was targeted by a suicide bomber believed to be from the Islamic State group," local activist Wissam al-Dimashqi told The New Arab.

The HNC later confirmed the news in a statement posted on its social media pages.

The HNC vowed to continue Salim's work "until the country is purged of the forces of darkness, repression, and terrorism".

The head of the umbrella opposition group to which the HNC is affiliated tweeted to express condemnation of the assassination.

"The SNC mourns the martyr Col. Bakour Salim, member of the HNC, who was killed by the hands of treachery and terrorism at dawn today," wrote Anas al-Abda.
