Houthi shelling from Yemen border kills Saudi soldier

A Saudi border guard was killed when Houthi rebels shelled the kingdom's frontier, Riyadh's interior ministry said on Friday.

Two Saudi civilians and a Bangladeshi national were also wounded in separate rebel shelling on the same Tuwal district of Jizan on Thursday.

More than 100 civilians and Saudi Arabian soldiers have died in strikes and skirmishes along the frontier since a Riyadh-led coalition intervened in Yemen on the side of the internationally-recognised government in March last year.

Attacks from Yemen on Saudi Arabia's border region have intensified since the suspension of UN-brokered peace talks between the Houthi rebels, their allies, and Yemen's government in early August.

Earlier this month, the coalition said it shot down a missile fired by the insurgents towards an airbase in southern Saudi Arabia.

Rebels have also fired harder-to-detect Katyusha rockets, particularly into the Saudi border city of Najran.

UN figures suggest more than 10,000 people have been killed since the Saudi-led coalition began its military campaign on Houthi rebels in March 2015, most of which are civilians deaths, blamed on the coalition itself.
