Panic sparked among London worshippers after a man was tasered outside Regents Park Mosque, in reaction to what was initially thought to be another Islamophobic attack.

Social media users posted videos and images from the scene, showing the tasered man. Rumours circulated that the man was in possession of a baseball bat or a knife, though eyewitnesses quickly refuted them.

"The man came up to the main hall, picked up two shoehorns and started smacking it everywhere. I was with my uncle and he moved me away" an eyewitness named Rafat told The New Arab.

"The security team then managed to get the shoehorns off him and escort him out of the Mosque as the prayer finished. We went outside and we saw one undercover car and a police van, with the man having been tasered."

Police have told The New Arab that this is not yet being treated as a terrorist incident and that his motive is unknown and is being investigated.

They arrived on the scene in response to calls that started at 1:22am.

The man is in custody at Central Police Station on suspicion of affray.

There were no other injuries at the scene.

The New Arab has contacted Regents Park Mosque for a comment.
