A gunman opened fire at a synagogue in southern California on the last day of the Jewish holiday of Passover, in what authorities are describing as a "hate crime".

At least one woman has been killed and three people injured in a shooting at a synagogue in the city of Poway near San Diego in southern California.

The Mayor of Poway, Steve Vaus, described the incident as a “hate crime”. It comes exactly six months after 11 people were killed in a synagogue in Pittsburgh by a gunman shouting “All Jews must die”.

A 19-year-old man has been detained in connection with the shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue. Services were being held in the synagogue for the last day of the Jewish festival of Passover.

Officers say that police were called to the synagogue at around 11:30 am local time (8:30 pm GMT). Three patients, one woman and two men, were admitted to the Palomar Health Medical Center Hospita around 12:30 pm local time (9:30 pm GMT) on Saturday. They were reported to be in a stable condition

Minoo Anvari, an Iranian refugee whose husband was attending services inside when gunshots rang out, told KUSI-TV that the wounded included the rabbi, who was shot in the hand. "We are united. You can't break us. We are in the U.S.," Anvari told KUSI.

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said there was no known threat following the arrest of the suspect. However, he said authorities had stepped up patrol at places of worship in the area as a precaution.

US President Donald Trump has offered "deepest sympathies to the families of those affected".
