A notorious Turkish-Syrian pro-regime warlord has been reportedly seriously injured in an assassination attempt in the Latakia countryside, according to media reports on Saturday.

Mihrac Ural, also known as Ali Kayyali, is believed to be behind a number of massacres of villages in opposition areas in Syria, along with deadly bomb attacks in Turkey.

He was badly hurt when an improvised bomb, planted by a rebel group, was detonated as he inspected regime militias in northern Latakia on Saturday morning.

Ural was then flown by helicopter from Latakia to the Syrian capital Damascus for treatment.

A photo claimed to be of Ural has been widely shared on social media and shows a bloodied and badly injured man lying on a stretcher.

Turkish-born Ural is one of the most reviled regime figures in Syria, heading the Syrian Resistance militia, which has been described as Far-Left by some, but viewed more widely as a sectarian Alawite terror group.

Ural has been described as the "Butcher of Baniyas" for his alleged role in heading the massacre of Sunni Syrian civilians in Tartous province in 2013.

The UN reported that up to 450 people were brutally butchered in massacres in Baniyas and Baida, including dozens of children.

Previous assassination attempts against Ural and claims of his death have been reported throughout the Syria war.

Ural is always wanted by Ankara for his alleged role in the killing of 53 people in the Turkish border town of Reyhanli in 2013, which had become a place of refuge for Syrians.

Reyhanli was hit by another car bombing this week, killing at least three Syrians.
