The 42-year-old son of Donald Trump has been ridiculed online after he shared an image of a world map with his election predictions on Twitter, that left many scratching their heads.

Predicting a "red wave", Donald Trump Jr posted a world map with majority of countries filled in with red, the Republican Party's colour, to indicate that his father will emerge victorious in the election.

In a tweet on Election Day, Trump Jr said: "Okay, finally got around to making my electoral map prediction", sharing an image of a world map that showed Russia, North Korea and Iran as Trump backers.

Only China, Mexico, Liberia and India were Democrat, according to his map.

The map also showed the US painted as red, with only California and New York marked as Democrat-voting.

Many took to Twitter to mock his tweet, speculating that Trump Jr may have confused India for Iran.

"Oh my god he thinks India is Iran doesn’t he," a Twitter user said.

"I'm pretty sure Don Jr. confused Iran and India on a world map. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it," tweeted Ilan Goldenberg, a foreign policy and defence expert.

"So if I understand this map correctly, and that's a big if, California, Mexico, New York, Cuba, Liberia, India (minus Kashmir), India, Sri Lanka, and China... are Democrat now?" tweeted Matthew Champion, editor for VICE World News.

Some in India voiced offence because the map showed Jammu and Kashmir as belonging to Pakistan – India’s arch enemy, which has claimed the disputed region as its own for decades.

"So much for the friendship with Trump Senior. Junior has placed India firmly with @JoeBiden & @KamalaHarris though interestingly Jr. believes J&K & the NorthEast go against the rest of India & will vote Trump. Someone needs to take his colouring pencils away," tweeted Indian politician Omar Abdullah.

"India without Jammu & Kashmir! Trump Junior needs Geography lessons to begin with! Is this really how Trump wants the Election Day to begin? Not surprised though!" tweeted Indian journalist Aditya Raj Kaul.

Others attempted to make some sense of the map.

A twitter user said: "I'd like to think it's the LIBERiA(L) thing. Other issues:
-South Sudan isn't on it
-Croatia is left blank (Melania is from neighbor Slovenia)
-the Black Sea is shaded red
-Sri Lanka isn't part of India
-Cuba isn't the only communist country
-it gives ALL of Kashmir to Pakistan.."

Millions of Americans voted on Tuesday amid a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, to decide whether to reelect Trump, one of the most polarizing presidents in US history, or to send Democrat Joe Biden to the White House.

A record-breaking number of early votes - more than 100 million - have already been cast in an election that has the bitterly divided country on edge and is being closely watched around the world.
