Renowned Syrian director Hatem Ali dies in Cairo

Prominent Syrian director Hatem Ali died at the age of 58 in Cairo on Tuesday, local media reported, citing a heart attack.

Ali, whose career spanned three decades, rose to prominence for his drama series' which helped transport Syrian television to the wider region.

Among his most famous works were Mirrors (1998), Four Seasons (1999), King Farouk (2007) and most recently Orkadia (2017).

Ali was born in the Golan Heights in June 1962 and studied theatre in Damascus before delving into drama, while the multi-award winning director also played several key acting roles.

News of his passing prompted condolences online for celebrities and TV lovers alike.

"All condolences to his family, may their hearts find patience," Syrian singer Nassif Zeytoun said, describing the news as painful.

"My mentor, role model.. what a huge loss," actor Moatasem Al-Nahar said.

"Very sad news, may you rest in peace," singer Cyrine Abdelnour tweeted.

"I was shocked by the death of the great Syrian director, Mr. Hatem Ali," Egyptian actress Menna Fadhali said.

"I had the honour of working with you, the most important and most beautiful work of which that is close to my heart is King Farouk. I will not forget your belief in me as an actress," she added, describing him as a friend and brother.
