Eyewitnesses say a 7-metre high steel wall is being constructed along Egypt's border with Gaza.
Egypt has started construction of a steel wall running along its 14km (7 mile) border with Gaza, according to eyewitnesses.

The wall reportedly runs parallel with a semi-completed concreted wall started in February, with a space of around 8 metres between them.

So far, 1 kilometre of the steel wall has been completed from the eastern side of Karam Abu Salem, eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency. The sources added that the 7-metre high wall will also be equipped with electronic sensors.

The Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry in Gaza and Egypt's army have issued no statements on the matter.

Nearly 2 million Gazans have been under Israeli siege since 2007, with extremely limited access to necessities such as healthcare, water and food.

Palestinian tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border were demolished in 2013, when a buffer zone was also created between the two territories.

According to Gaza's ministry of social development, 70 percent of the population of the territory is food insecure. In the summer of 2019, Gaza's Ministry of Health announced it was facing an "unprecedented" shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies – a situation that has not yet been alleviated.
