At least six people have been killed in a shootout in Saudi Arabia's southwestern Asir province, a police spokesman said on Wednesday.

The incident, in which three people were also injured, was sparked by a dispute between the families, the Saudi Press Agency quoted Zayed al-Dabbash as saying.

The fatalities were all Saudi citizens, al-Dabbash said, adding that police had seized weapons used in the crime and that prosecutors were investigating.

Mass shootings are rare in the kingdom, and the police official gave no indication the shooting was terror-related.

Local media said the shooting involved two duelling families, though the cause of their dispute was unclear. It took place in al-Amuwa, a landlocked region of Asir.
