A jihadi group in the northern Sinai desert has come under fire from drone aircraft, it was reported on Monday. It is unclear if the airstrikes were carried out by the Egyptian army or the Israeli military.

Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, Egypt’s most active jihadi group on the peninsula, confirmed four of its members had been killed as they set up a rocket launching pad aimed at Israel on the Egyptian border with Gaza.

A source in North Sinai province said missiles from several drones hit close to Sheikh Zuweid City. "The drones are still flying at low altitude in the skies over Sheikh Zuweid," he added.

The Egyptian army has been waging a military campaign against jihadi groups in the Sinai for more than a year.
