At least eleven people were killed and wounded in a family shootout in central Egypt, local media reported on Sunday.

A dispute between two families in the village of Abu al-Hidr in the Asyut governorate escalated on Friday and eventually led to an armed clash, leaving eight people killed in the quarrel and another three injured.

Police arrived at the scene and managed to bring the situation under control.

The wounded were transported to the Assiut University Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the dispute was over the guardianship of a plot of land where a project was being built in the village. A discussion between the two families quickly turned into a heated argument, leading to the gunfight.
