A faction of the Northern Army, a Free Syrian Army affiliated group, announced the formation of a security battalion of women in the Aleppo countryside.

Although women have formed groups fighting with the FSA in Aleppo before, it is the first such battalion in Syria working on security issues.

"The battalion is for security only and will not work on battle fronts," Rashid Zaamout, the founder of the Northern Army told The New Arab.

The group, named "Free of the North" will be limited to pursuing violations carried out by women, searching women in checkpoints and follow-up of women prisoners.

"The battalion is composed of about 30 women who have studied in various disciplines in universities, have undergone several security and police courses and will be present in opposition-controlled areas north of Aleppo," Zaamout added.

The battalion will receive equipment and support under the Northern Army.

Zaamout also revealed a cell "led by a woman, based in the northern region, working with the opposition fighter to locate the regime’s aircrafts."

Women have played a central role in the Syrian revolution, particularly as more men emigrated or were killed in the conflict.
