The Palestinian Hamas movement announced on Tuesday that the head of its political bureau abroad, Khaled Meshaal, has contracted the coronavirus.

"After conducting a medical examination, it was found that… commander Khaled Meshaal, head of Hamas abroad, was infected with the Covid-19 virus," head of the movement’s media department abroad, Hisham Qassem, was quoted as saying by Palestinian media.

Meshaal only had slight symptoms of the disease, while he "follows up with his duties and responsibilities as he quarantines at home" in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Meshaal was one of the founding members of Hamas and led the movement from 1996 until 2017.
