Yemen's Houthi rebels claim ten attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia

Yemen’s Houthi rebels carried out a large-scale attack on Saudi Arabia, the group’s military spokesman claimed Sunday.

Yahya Saree said on Twitter that the group's "missiles" and "air force" divisions carried out a joint operation against "sensitive" military sites in Najran, Abha, and Khamis Mushait, all close to Saudi Arabia's southern border with Yemen.

Saree claimed that the strikes - which included five ballistic missiles and five drones - targeted the National Guard camp in Najran, as well as military sites at Abha Airport, and the King Khalid Airbase in Khamis Mushait.

He said the attack took place within the past 24 hours.

The Saudi-led Gulf coalition battling the Houthis announced Sunday evening that it had intercepted two ballistic missiles over Khamis Mushait. Saudi Arabia has witnessed hundreds of attempted missile and drone strikes by the Houthis on military and civilian sites in the kingdom since Riyadh intervened in the war in 2015.

The coalition has also carried out air raids in Yemen against Houthi and other targets, killing civilians.

In a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, the coalition said attempts to target civilians from hostile militias were "repelled and destroyed".

The developments come amid fierce fighting in Marib between Houthis and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, which has seen hundreds of people killed and thousands displaced.

Battles are concentrated around Marib's oil fields, considered one of the last major northern strongholds of the government.

The government is currently seated in Yemen’s de facto capital Aden after Sanaa was taken over by Houthis in 2014.
