An Iranian soldier has shot dead three troops in southern Iran, and injured two others.

The unnamed soldier killed himself after the attack, a semi-official Iranian news agency reported late on Friday.

The shooting took place at a youth correctional facility in Yusuj, less around 700 kilometres south of the capital Tehran.

Fattah Mohammadi, deputy governor of Yasuj, said the two soldiers injured in the shooting are in a critical condition and an investigation into the attack has started.

The report only gave the initials of the shooter, saying he killed himself after the assault.

Iranian media occasionally report on similar shootings.

Military service of up to 24 months is mandatory for men aged 19 and above in Iran.
